From 2017 and 2021, the former German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (today: The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space) supported the modernization of the research infrastructure of the institutes cooperating within FMD (11 institutes of the Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics as well as the Leibniz institutes FBH and IHP) with a total of 350 million euros. Since 2025, Fraunhofer AISEC and Fraunhofer IMWS have also been actively involved in the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD).

The “FMD” is also a registered word mark (registration number: 302023118127) of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e. V. at the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA).
